Our next project on the outside of the house was replacing the roof over the kitchen porch. From early photos of the house, we could see there was a roof over that porch in the exact design as the roof over the front porch. It is on the south side of the house, so we felt it had come down due to deterioration from the weather over the years.

So, after a lot of calculations and engineering, Steve designed rafters that would create a sloped roof and the carved posts just like the front porch. I sketched the gingerbread brackets to scale and cut them out with my scroll saw. Once again we had lots of great help from our family on this project.

Once this roof was in, it seemed as though our house just sighed … it had been off-balance for many years without this roof to balance the symmetry of the house along with the front porch roof.
