I knew retirement would be nice, having free time and being able to plan and do things I really want to do, but it has been a super pleasant surprise as to how wonderful and freeing it is.  We have been so busy with trips and projects that the last three months have flown by. Our first trip in September was a biking trip with our whole family to the Hiawatha bike trail in the Bitterroot Mountains on the Idaho/Montana border. Our kids rented a house for 3 nights in Coeur d’ Alene which is an hour away from the bike trail and we had the best time, not only on the bike ride but also lots of super fun family time. The Hiawatha bike ride was on Steve’s bucket list, so our kids treated us to the ride and weekend together for his 70th birthday. Hiawatha is a 15-mile downhill ride through the Bitterroot Mountains on an old railroad track that has been graveled (rails to trails). We went through 9 tunnels (one is 2 miles long!) and 8 trestles. A shuttle at the bottom took us back up to the parking lot. Here are some of our favorite photos from our trip.  Our ride was a bit on the muddy side, so we had someone take a photo of all of our muddy backs when we were done 🙂
